xampp not working on windows xp sp2

The simple answer to this question is that you are using wrong version for wrong operating system use this version for windows xp sp2   xampp 1.7.7 win32

On Lan (local area network)
change setting to Automaticlly detect settings
in internet explorer

download xampp install
copy phpbb in htdock folder in C:/xampp/htdock

http://localhost/bb/install/index.php
                              Database type = MySQL
DNS: Database server hostename = localhost
            Database server port =
                    Database name = phpbb
              Database username = root
              Database password = *****
           prefer for tables indatabase = phpbb_

                       proceed to next step

Make database on xampp 
go to    https://localhost/phpmyadmin/
click     Databases
type database name and click create database is ready
